27 Jan 11

Today we continued going over nutrition information as well as reading the first section of the Nutrition chapter (page 110)
We went over: Saturated and Unsaturated fats and their examples, Good HDL Cholesterol and Bad LDL cholesterol and their examples, we discussed the following nutrients and their uses in our bodies: Protein-build and repair muscle, Fat-energy store, insulation, protection and vitamin transport and Carbs-energy and brain function.

We had a trivia as well.

Today the kids had a journal entry that was based on a reading from Hate Mail From Cheerleaders. The story was about the obesity rate, media messages and the fast food industry along with the school system cutting P.E. I asked the students to write about how they felt about either of those topics.
We went over some nutrition information like the food guide pyramid, some acronyms: FDA, RDA, USDA. We discussed the food guide pyramid and it's recommendations as well.

Today the students had a trivia question about how many calories are equal to one pound, and the answer is 3500. Today we also went over some nutrition label information. I had the students participate in our newly designed Practical Minute lesson, where today's lesson was how to write a personal check. They seemed a bit enthusiastic about learning how to do this, so we will see how the next Practical Minute lesson goes.

The students had a Journal entry today which asked: If you could go anywhere in the world for one month and money was no object, where would you go and what would you do?
Today the students watched I eat 33,000 calories a day and were required to take notes for credit. The vocab was also assigned today:
Macabre, Naive, Obituary, Pacify, Quadriceps, Waddle, Radiant, Sabbatical, Tarnish, Ukulele, Vacant and Xenophobe. Students are reminded to write a sentence for each definition for full credit.

Today the students presented their health articles that they had ample time to complete. As a result of not doing the assignment some classes were walking the track today for corrective measures. Let's hope that next Friday will be different, since the rewards are up to the students themselves.

Today we finished going over the General health information from yesterday and for the remainder of the class, the students were to attempt SSR. Health Articles are due this Friday.

18 Jan 11

Today the students had a trivia question. They also were assigned their next health article that is due on Friday. I've extended the classroom donation deadline to tomorrow due to Monday being the holiday and many kids forgot all together. We went over some basic health information that they took notes from the board. Grades were updated, and printed up for the kids to check their status. A lot of kids are still in the gray area because of one assignment but have been assured that if they complete this week's health article, they will be in better standing.

Today the students had a journal entry that asked how they feel about celebrities in the justice system and the media attention that is given to them.
They also had the opportunity to work on and turn in their book work from yesterday had they not finished. They turned in their vocabulary that was assigned on Monday, and also turned in the 2 point papers explaining why they did not do their homework if need be. It was explained to the class about the 70% rule that will be taking effect in a couple of weeks.
We began taking donations for the wellness center drive and that will end on the 20th of January. Health articles will be due next Friday. No school on Monday the 17th!

13 Jan 11

Today the students had a trivia question. They also finished reading Chapter 1 in the textbook and began working on the chapter review from page 24. They are directed to complete #'s 1-11 writing out or paraphrasing the questions for full credit. As this work is typically used as a study guide for their tests. They were also reminded that their vocab is due on Friday. And the extra credit is due on Tuesday since we are out on Monday for the holiday.
The students are also encouraged to complete the book work at home via the internet now that we have access to the textbook on line now.

11-12 Jan 11

Tuesday-The students and I went over the directions for getting to the textbook on line at Glencoe.com and we browsed the site as much as we could from the classroom's computer.
Book numbers were assigned today as well, as well as the weekly bookmaster was assigned and the job explained.
Passes were handed out to the students that were not present the day before.

Wednesday-The students were reminded to check their grades that were posted yesterday. We read the first lesson of Chapter 1 as a class and then had SSR for the remainder of the class. I also reminded the kids about their extra credit opportunity they have by reading the books and doing a book review and presentation if they chose to do so. They also had a journal entry that asked: What would you do with 14 million dollars?

10 Jan 10

Today the students finished watching Sicko and turned in their notes. The syllabus as well as the special note for senior parents was passed out as well. Vocab was assigned today: Abattoir, ballistics, chemotherapy, daunting, easel, fallible, jalopy, gnagrene, habitual, idiocy and kamikaze. The students are to define each word and use in a sentence for full credit. They were also given a journal entry that asked: How did they feel about Saturday's shooting incident.

Both today and yesterday the students watched Sicko by Michael Moore. On Friday the students presented their health articles and were given one last opportunity to turn in their blog assignment. It's all on for next week. Tardies, passes, and homework responsibilities. This week was a "free" week, but it gets serious next week. I will be passing out Syllabus next week for parents to sign and return. Making the Grade will be up as well, and the parental access page will then be in full swing.

Today the students began watching Sicko by Michael Moore. They were asked to take notes on the movie (at least ten) and hold on to them until the movie is finished. I collected the blog assignment homework, but am extending the due date until Friday since we still have so many stragglers coming into the class. They were again reminded that they will have a health article due on Friday.

The students were given the homework assignment of actually visiting this blog for the first entry's homework assignment. They were also assigned a Health Article that is due on Friday. We also went over some titles for the Book review for extra credit and also reminded the students of the deadlines for both the review and the donations to the classroom.

Welcome to Health Class!

I wanted to first start off by saying welcome to Health Class! I know that we will have a good time in class this semester and I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you. I hope to build great working relationships with you all. I promise you, you will learn a lot in this class and hopefully enjoy yourself while doing it.
