Tuesday 12/11/12

Today the students who brought their rough drafts in for review by their peers had that happen today. Their names were written down and they will receive 5 points extra credit for their efforts. After the review, they then watched a video on Meningitis and were required to take notes on the video. The papers are due tomorrow. We will begin presenting on tomorrow as well.

Today the students began working on typing their papers that are due tomorrow for the Peer Review in class. There will be points assigned to the peer review so it is important to have something to go over in class. Wednesday we will began the presentations to the class without exception. Don't forget to work on your extra credit item if you have any. I have a few note cards, but you are advised to buy your own and dole them out to your classmates as you see fit.

Tomorrow we are going to the computer lab to work on your peer review edition of your research paper. Wednesday, the final copy is due.

Today we graded the chapter 24 text work, and the Vocab was assigned and due on Friday. Don't forget to write the paragraph instead of sentences. Here are the words:

Today the kids had a quiz covering the Drug unit. They were able to use some notes from the summarizations taken from the group summaries.  We graded them in class.  I'm gonna try like mad to get them in the computer and get your grades updated before you leave tomorrow.  We will watch Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins tomorrow (hopefully).  Shout out to Daniel C and Saul M for coming  helping with my SWAT posters today when my club members deserted me! :)

Today the students worked on the article and question that was given out on Friday.  I also had them write thank you letters to someone on staff at Catalina since it is the season of being thankful and what not.  Tomorrow, we will have a little pop quiz thingie on the Drug Unit. I will give you some time to study, but then it is ON!

Today we worked on summarizing Chapter 23 in triads, grouped by states and cities. I think you all liked the grouping option/task. A couple...okay one girl said she liked it because it kept her occupied from arguing about why you had to work in groups. Said it distracted her (having to find which state she was grouped with). We will probably be doing that again some time soon, and maybe next time we will group by song title and artist??? Suggestions? I know Geometric theorems! :)  The summaries will be better presented tomorrow with time to spare EVEN after the health articles are presented. You ARE printing yours right now aren't you!? Oh! They had a journal entry today as well: Would you take $1 million to never set foot back in the country? Where would you go and why would you leave?

Today the students had a sub and worked on chapter 23 chapter review some recalling the facts questions. They also had a journal entry that asked if they would commit perjury for a friend that was facing drug charges. Today the kids turned in their vocab and either went outside to play or chilled in' class. 4th pd. went to the assembly. Grades are updated and progress grades put in. See you all TUESDAY!

Election day!!!

Sorry for the super late post. But today the kids took the test and graded them in class. The vocab words were assigned: ketamine, detoxification, recovery, withdrawal, inhalant, ecstasy, tolerance, depressant, hallucinogen and flashback. Define the words and use them ALL in a cohesive paragraph.

Today the students had a journal entry asking who would they like to have with them in a shack in Antarctica. They then read an article in Current Health and answered questions and turned them in. There's a test tommorrow over tobacco and alcohol.

Today the students had a play day. Sike, we played Jeopardy with a very fluid rules and extremely polarized scores! It was very spirited and fun. I hope you all remembered something, because remember, your final is CUMULATIVE!!!!  Don't forget your Health Articles!!!!

Today we finished watching the smashed video and watched a short dvd on tobacco. Vocab is due tommorow. I'm going to collect the alcohol and hazing notes.

Today the kids finished reading chapter 23 and summarized the last lesson of the chapter in their composition books. We then watched an enthralling video on the history of tobacco. ;)

Today the students and I began reading Chapter oops, I forgot. Well it was page 562? Well anyway, we began reading the Alcohol chapter. The students summarized both sections 1 and 2 that we covered, and depending on attendance we may have a video tomorrow. I'm working on the vocab, because I'm trying to change it up. Give me a minute. Should be done/in my head and on paper by tonight.  Either way, it's still gonna be due on Friday.

Here are the vocab words... Intoxication, Adverse, Dependence, Renal, Psychosis, Convulsion, Blackout, Intervention, Compulsion, Tremor.  You are to supply legitimate definitions for all 10, as well as put DEFINE each word in YOUR OWN words and then you are to illustrate(draw a picture) of 1 of the words of your choice.  Takes some thought, but you can do it.

10/16-17/12

10-16- The students had a post test on the Tobacco information that they previously took a post test on at the beginning of the unit.  Health Articles are due on Friday.  They then took a pre-test on the alcohol unit we are about to begin.  We went over the answers of the pre-test too.  They were reminded to do the Video response assingment by Wednesday for credit.


10-17- The students are testing today, so for 3rd and 4th period, they will be having a Ben's Bells Town hall type conversation in the class rooms.

Today the students read the Chapter 21 in the text covering Tobacco.  I had them work in triads as we have done before.  They worked on summarizing and if they had time, they transposed their summaries on to the larger sheet of paper to be shared with the class on Monday. 

They also had a journal entry asking if they would ever smoke or chew tobacco, or date someone that did.

Today the students had their test on Chapter 7 and 8 and we graded them in class.  They were reminded that the vocab is due on Friday.  Definitions and sentences are mandatory.  I will pass out passes for the quarter (2 free) this week. You might need to remind me.  If you did not pass this test you MUST re-take this test before Friday. You can come at your lunch time to do so. It will not be made up after school.  And it must be completed and graded before FRIDAY. No exceptions! Your athletic eligibility relies on whethe you get that grade up before PROGRESS reports are due!

Today the students had a journal entry following the story about a son that passed away at 16.  I had the students write a letter to someone with sentence starters; Dear ______   I'm sorry, I wish, If I could change....

They were assigned Vocab : CARCINOGEN, STIMULANT, LEUKOPLAKIA, MISCARRIAGE, METASTASIS, LYMPHOMA, ADDITIVE, EMPHYSEMA, ARSENIC AND CILIA. 
WORDS ARE TO BE DEFINED AND USED IN SENTENCES FOR FULL CREDIT!!!!

We went over the test and they will be tested tomorrow on chapters 7+8.

Turns out this is gonna be double the work for me to post in both spots! You guys better take advantage of this situation then...I'm telling you!!!  Okay, so today the students presented their product to the class.  They were inventive and funny.  You all did a great job! Today the students worked on their fitness/health product and turned in their Vocab.  They are to finish the work over the weekend and present it on Monday. Passes were passed out and grades updated. The students were also given grade reports to have them signed by parents to receive the NA grade for 20% of the orginal value of the item.  Don't forget to show up at the game and make contact with me for your homework pass!  Go Trojans!  Facebook page will be up this weekend.

19-20 Sept 2012

Wednesday the students had a journal entry that asked them to talk about how they felt about fad diets specifically spoke about the lady who dieted on only Starbucks for 2 years to lose weight.  They then worked on Chapter 8's Chapter Review #'s 1-9. writing out or paraphrasing the questions as always for full credit that is!  EARLY OUT!!!

Thursday-Trivia and then they worked on the Fitness/Health related product with one partner or solo.  The item can be real or imagined and contain the following: Specify audience (who is it for?)
The price
Description/how it works
Where is it available. 

They worked on this the entire class period and were encouraged to work on it at home too but  will have time in class tomorrow to make it "pop" with color and style! ha ha ha. It is due at the end of the class period on FRIDAY.....Guess what else is due on FRIDAY!? You guessed it! VOCAB!!! don't forget the sentences!!!!!

I appreciate the hard work that you guys put forth this week and you deserve to be rewarded for such.  HOWEVER, those that did not turn in their work will not be able to join in on the festivities that will ensue. Today the students did SSR for the duration of the class if they did not have to start or finish the Chapter review from yesterday (chpt 6). Grades were updated and posted.  They had a journal entry: What would you go back for if you could safely go back into your burning house for, assuming all living things got out safely beforehand?

Yesterday the students had a journal entry that had them respond to the story about female fight phenomenon. We started reading chapter 6(wt mgmt).
Today we finished reading chapter 6 & they were assigned #'s1-12 in the chapter review. They are required to write out or paraphrase the questions. HEALTH ARTICLES ARE DUE ON FRIDAY! The signed grade reports are due by Friday.

7 Sept 12

Today the students turned in their vocab and not one class reached the 70% required for a free day. I spoke to them about the importance of remembering deadlines and checking the blog for the assignments on a daily basis.  I also discussed decreasing the due date to one or two days depending on how they turn in their work next week.  We will see. We began reading the chapter on wt. mgmt.  TRIVIA question today.

Today the students were passed back their graded Nutrition/Health Tests. We then went over the calculation for BMI and discussed how it is not the most accurate measurement of one's health status.  We talked about insurance companies using this calculation to deny otherwise healthy applicants based on this simple math problem. We also talked about what is considered normal by today's standards and the reality of the idea of what is considered normal. 
They also had a JOURNAL ENTRY: READ THE RAY LEWIS MURDER STORY AND ASKED THEM TO RESPOND TO THE STORY IN A PARAGRAPH IN THEIR COMPOSITION BOOKS.
The students who did not pass the test are required to re-take the test by Wednesday of next week or the grade will stand. 
Vocab is due tomorrow and the 70% rule is in effect for the enrollment of the class, not the class attendees.  Good luck Trojans!

Today the students had a trivia that was asking about daily calorie consumption.  They were also assigned VOCAB: Abattoir, Ballistics, Chemotherapy, Daunting, Easel, Fallible, Jalopy, Gangrene, Habitual, Idiocy, Laceration, Kamikaze The words are to be defined and used in health related sentences. And yes, it is possible.

They then figured out their daily caloric consumption (BMR). We then went over the test that will be taken TOMORROW!!!!

Today the kids presented their health articles to the class.  They were going to go outside if they reached 70% participation. The only class to reach it was 4th period.  Next week the class will have vocab due on Friday.  It will be assigned on Monday.

Today in class the students had a journal entry: that asked if they found a roach in their dinner while dining at a friend's house, what would they do? 
They then finished working on their crossword from yesterday.  We went over most of the answers with me "helping" them complete it.  They then worked on Chapter 5 (nutrition) Chapter review in the text # 1-12 RTF 4,7 +10.  Don't forget that if you did not get to finish that you can access the book from the internet using the link from the previous blog posts.  Gustavo...I swear I will answer your emails from here on out! :) Health articles due tomorrow. Today in class we finished going over the information that was summarized from the day before. They also had a trivia question that asked about the name of the current hurricane that is making landfall in the Gulf Coast right now (Isaac).  I also handed out a Nutrition crossword that will be due tomorrow.  *REMINDER* HEALTH ARTICLES ARE DUE ON FRIDAY! Today in class the students had a JOURNAL ENTRY: How do you feel about Lance Armstrong losing all of his medals and awards for biking coincidentally as he withdrew his team from fighting the allegations about him doping in his sport.
I then collected the counts for both their journal and trivia entries for the upcoming progress reports that are due on Wednesday.  Then we went over the summarized infomation about the Nutrition chapter as well. 
Students are reminded that their health articles are due on FRIDAY with no exception!

Today the students had a TRIVIA question that asked about Neil Armstrong's death this past weekend.  The students then grouped up in their triads as they had done on Friday to finish up their note taking from their group reading.  1st period actually wrote their summaries on the board, while the other class periods wrote their notes on the news print. We will go over the summaries tomorrow as a group in order for the rest of the groups to be able to take notes on the chapter. The grades were updated and current grades are posted. They were also passed out their passes for last week's attendance.
I also made a point to tell them that they will lose their bell work points for each tardy that they accrue.  We are closing in on Progress, so I will be collecting their journal and trivia entries thus far. I will make a big difference in their current grades that for sure! Oh!!! Health Articles are due on FRIDAY!!!!! Do it today and turn it in, because if you get to 75% turn in rate, you will get to go outside as a reward!!!! Do it!!!!

Today in class the students had a Journal Entry: Why do you or don't you support our athletic teams? Where is your school spirit?  After they did the journal entry, they were grouped in groups of three to for reading triads. They were to assign a READER, SCRIBE and a SUMMARIZER  for each group. They were assigned a set number of pages per group and were meant to keep notes on one single sheet of paper. The idea is that we will come together on Monday and the groups will present their information for the entire class to take notes on their summaries and such. 
I collected the vocab and rewarded the A students with a homemade treat. The grades were updated and printed out. Passes will be passed out on Monday. 

*if you were not present on Friday, your work is due on Monday first thing, and you may want to access the text book on line as you now know how, in order to keep in line with the other students.

Today in class, the students had a JOURNAL ENTRY: What was the weirdest thing that has ever happened to you in your life.
They were also allowed to finish working on their SSR Vocab for the first 10 minutes of class. After they finished the SSR vocab, we began reading Chapter 4 (nutrition) as a group. We read the 1st lesson and down to Fiber. The students were asked to list in their summary log some of the bullet statements from the chapter.

Today the students had to turn in their blog online quiz assignment today. We also had SSR today with the students finding 10 unfamiliar words to define and use in sentences. If they didn't finish they will have 10 minutes tomorrow to finish.

Today the students had a Nutrition Pre-test that we took after they finished their JOURNAL ENTRY: I read them the story of Sean O'Hair and his abusive dad, and asked them to respond to the story. 
I reminded the students that their vocab is listed on the blog and is DUE on Friday. Also that the blog assignment is due to my inbox by 1st period tomorrow morning -NO exceptions. I went over the directions once again on how to get to this via the blog's directions. 
I also mentioned to them the idea of me purchasing their book review books from them if they decide they don't want to hold on to them after they've initially read them. At a hugely discounted price of course! :)  And I suggested they check out Bookman's and Goodwill for the titles that may fit their fancy.  We are doing SSR tomorrow, so the students should have books in hand and be ready to go.  There just might be another book check. (wink wink, nudge nudge)

Today we talked about the Tanning mom and the moral and ethical issues that surround this case.  We also talked about dating and relationships with regards to whether or not platonic relationships are a realistic phenomenon.

Today the students took the Love Language Assessment we discussed different ways people show their love for one another.  They had their last Journal entry which asked under what circumstances would they donate an organ if they would at all. I collected their entries and one trivia.  Their last health article is due on Friday.

Yesterday the students had a test covering alcohol and drugs. On Friday they presented their health articles.

Yesterday the kids reviewed several song titles for their lyrics and the videos for their portrayal and usage of alcohol in their songs. They wrote a short synopsis for each selection and turned it in for credit.

Wednesday-Today I collected their journal and trivia entries for their 3 qtr grades. We went ove a chapter in the Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks.

Today the students watched a video on Hazing and binge drinking and they took notes for credit. Their health article is due on Friday (Thursday if you are going to be out for Prom). The points were added and new grades posted.

today the kids worked on Chapter 22 Chapter review RTF #'s 2,3,6,8,10 and 11. They were also given the opportunity to finish and turn in their vocab if they did not have it completed.

Today the students did a group exercise putting together a puzzle and then writing the answer on the board. They then participated in "pick a corner" activity. They also had a JOURNAL ENTRY: You and a friend went to a party where alcohol and drugs were being used. You find your friend in a back room unconcious, what do you do?

the students are assigned 5 vocab words which are due this Friday. They are to be defined and used in sentences as per usual. Today and yesterday in class we read chapter 22 (alcohol) pers. 1-2 were able to complete the chapter while 4-6 read only one section. We will finish on Friday.

Today the kids had a journal entry that asked what they thought about glamorized fighting like the extreme chick fighting talked about in HMFC. They also worked on their Chapter 23 Chapt. Rev. RTF 2,3,6,8-10 and the writing critically #1. They are to present their PSA's tomorrow in class.

Today the student had a trivia question about the Queen of England
They also had the option to work in triads to finish reading Chapter 23. They were to summarize that last section in their composition books for me to check for them tomorrow. They also were asked to write two facts per section for a total of 10 facts on a separate sheet of paper and turn it in to the box. Health Article due on FRIDAY!!!!

Today the students and I completed reading section 4 of Chapter 23. Their vocab is due tomorrow (complete with sentences) They will be rewarded with outside time if they acheive 70% turn in rate. They had a journal entry that asked: how do you feel about steriods in professional athletics or do you think steriod use if fair?

Today the students read sections 2-3 of Chapter 23 in the text. They summarized the sections in their composition books. I will be checking for your summaries when we are finished with the chapter. They are reminded to finish their vocab and turn it in on Friday in hopes of earning the right to go outside as a reward.

Monday the kids had a journal entry that asked their reaction to the flight attendant that had to be subdued on the American Airlines plane this past weekend.
I collected their journal/trivia points up to this point as well. REMINDER* YOUR JOURNAL/TRIVIA POINTS WILL BE AFFECTED NEGATIVELY BY YOUR TARDIES.
Today (Wednesday) The students had the Chapter 5 Nutrition test today. It seems as though test scores are warranting re-takes, so that will take place tomorrow for sure.

Today the students turned in their Vocab that was due. They also finished and graded in class the chapter 5 text work. The grades were updated and they had the rest of the class period to work on other work or read. Health Article due next week! AND I'm going to be checking Journals and Trivia next week too, as well as you all having a test on the Nutrition chapter work too.

Today the students had both a trivia and a Journal entry today. The journal entry was asking what they would change about their school lunches if they had the power. They were reminded that the vocab is due tomorrow NO EXCUSES! We went over the ingredients list over nutrition as well, and they finished watching the 33,000 cal. video and I checked for their notes. They also calculated both the BMI and BMR using the measurements I gave them.

Yesterday Monday- the kids learned how to to calculate both their BMI (body mass indexes) and their BMR (basal metabolic rate)=calorie consumption. They then calculated the BMI of either Troy Polamalu or Serena Williams to indicate that the BMI numbers are not always the most accurate measurement of someone's health status. They also had a trivia

Today-Tuesday-the kids had a Journal entry that asked what would be thier dream job. Then they worked on Chapter 5 Chapter review #'s 1-12 Recalling the Facts 4, 7 + 10 and STP 1+2. They are to write out or paraphrase the questions as always.
Vocab was assigned as well, and is due on Friday with Definitions and sentences for full credit. They are: Indigestible, Additives, Intolerance, Anaphylaxis, Dietitian, Contamination, Foodborne, Allergen, Salmonella and Essential

Today the kids had AIMS testing and therefore were only in classes 1, 2 and 3 today. We will still be re-taking and making up the test on Thursday. Health article still due on Friday.

Today the kids had their first experience reading in Triads. It seemed to go pretty well, I will however separate some groups to ensure that they are actually on point tomorrow. They will have a health article due this Friday. Re-takes and make-up for Wednesday's test will probably be on Thursday (giving the kids a break because of the AIMS schedule). The graded tests were passed back and newer grades posted. I still have to input the vocab that was due on Wednesday. Welcome back Trojans!

Today the kids had a trivia. The papers were all passed back, passes given out, and new grades posted. This was all done after the health articles were presented.

Today the students had a trivia question. They turned in their vocab and had a pop quiz over those vocab words. They then began working on Chapter 7 Chapter review #'s 1-12, writing out or paraphrasing each question for full credit.

Today we finished reading chapter 7 (mental health) in the text. Tomorrow we will work on the chapter review and they will turn in their vocab assignments. Today we began reading chapter 7 in the text book (covering Mental Health). VOCAB ASSIGNED: PSYCHOSIS, TRAUMATIZE, INHIBITIONS, INSOMNIA, PESSIMIST, OPTIMIST, HABITUAL, ANXIETY, STRESSOR, DISORDER. Words are to be defined and used in a health related sentence if possible. The words are due on Friday.

Today the kids presented their health articles. We had gone over some mental health information this week as well. I gave out print outs of the information we went over.

Today the students turned in their journal and trivia entries for the past 4 weeks. They are reminded that ever tardy deducts two points from their total score for that submission. They were also given back their graded tests for Chapter 1. The students who did not pass the test or received a 70% or lower will have the opportunity to re-take the test by the end of the week. No re-takes after Friday.They are reminded that the Health articles are due this Friday. We continued with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Today the kids had a trivia question about Demi Moore. They also turned in their signed grade reports from home for credit. They also turned in their vocab if they were not in class on Friday to turn it in. They then had a test on Chapter 1 as mentioned earlier. The HEALTH ARTICLE IS DUE ON FRIDAY!!!!
Passes will be given out tomorrow and the Journal entries will be collected on TUESDAY.

Today we continued One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The kids were reminded to take notes for credit. They also turned in their vocabulary today as well. We had a JOURNAL ENTRY: THINK OF A TIME WHEN YOU JUDGED SOMEONE UNFAIRLY. BY THEIR APPEARANCE, BEHAVIOR OR GENERAL REACTION. HAVE YOU BEEN ON THE OTHER SIDE, AND HOW DID IT MAKE YOU FEEL. I read them the story from HMFC about Allen Iverson as a background for the journal entry. There is a TEST ON MONDAY...COVERING THE CHAPTER 1 CHAPTER REVIEW THAT HAS BEEN PASSED OUT TO YOU AND GRADED. STUDY IT!!!!! ALSO....grade reports went out today and are to be signed and returned for credit ASAP!

Today the kids had a journal entry that was about Aaron Ralston's story of having to saw off his arm as depicted in the movie 127 hours. The students were to respond to that story from HMFC. They were then allow to participate in SSR or work on some other work for the remainder of the class. Including working on their vocab that is due on FRIDAY!!!

Today the kids had a trivia question. We went over Chapter 1 notes for general health information. And the students are reminded that their vocab is due on Friday. If you happen to have missed today, please see me for a copy of the notes. Tonight is Senior Night for the Boy's Soccer Team and I am giving extra credit to those who come out to support the kids. You must find me and come up to me and shake my hand (and give a bump :) )in order for me to recognize that you were there. Let's go help make tonight special for these boys. They've worked really hard for Catalina, let's show them we appreciate their efforts!

Today the kids for the most part presented their health articles from Friday. They were assigned VOCAB: cognitive, affirmation, susceptible, implication, boundary, suppression, procrastinate, competence, conscience and compassion. The words are to be defined and used in health related sentences for full credit. They also had a journal entry as well What would you do with 14.6 million dollars. This was based on the story in HMFC about Latrell Sprewell and the gentleman that won over 14 million dollars in this weekends lottery.

Today the kids had both a journal entry and a trivia question to make up for the missed one since I was out yesterday. The journal entry asked:If you could choose the manner of your death, would you? What would it be? It's morbid I know, but it was the first one that I came to in picking them from my book.
The health article is due tomorrow, don't forget the articles must go along with the summaries for full credit.

Today the students had a Journal entry: How do you feel about celebrities and the law/legal system? This was after the reading of two stories from Hate Mail From Cheerleaders.
They then worked on the Chapter 1 Chapter review bookwork that is written on the board. They are assigned a health article today that will be due on Friday. Don't forget there are links here to the text book as well so that students may work on their text work at home.

Today the students turned in their Vocab. If they reached the 70% requirement, they were allowed to watch more of the movie the sub had shown them. If not, they had to complete reading Chapter 1 and begin the chapter review 3 1,5,7-14 RTF 5+8 and stp. They had a trivia question today. Grade reports were sent home today for signature and return on Tuesday.

Today we went over the trivia from the day before, they also had a JOURNAL ENTRY:Why do or don't you attend social events at our school. That was after I read the story Worth the Wait from Hate Mail From Cheerleaders to them. Then we began reading Chapter 1 in the text. We got to Section three. We will finish tomorrow in class and VOCAB is DUE tomorrow! Make sure you have definitions and sentences!

Today the kids had SSR for the day. I made sure to get the grades and all the housekeeping taken care of. They had a trivia but only some did it because of the sub. Will grade them tomorrow. Don't forget vocab due on Friday.

Today I collected the Health History worksheet, and syllabi from students if they still had not turned them in. I also collected Friday's homework, of the blog assignment today as well. I told the students that if they turned them in tomorrow they would lose some points but I would still accept their work. Grades were posted, and vocab was assigned. Vocab: Abstinence, Cumulative, Heredity, Influence, Longevity, Prevention, Reliable, Resistance, Transition, Transplant. Words are to be defined and used in health related sentences and are due on Friday.
Journal Entry: Read to the them story of the 15 y/o girl that was deported to Colombia and asked them to respond to it in their journals.
